Preventing Mosquito Bites this Season

With mosquito season approaching, many people in the South are dreading the coming months. These pesky bugs carry diseases like West Nile virus, Zika, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis–all of which can be deadly. While total extermination is not the answer because mosquitoes are actually valuable to the Louisiana ecosystem, there are steps you can take to avoid mosquito bites. We’re here to help eliminate your apprehension with the following mosquito prevention tips:

1. Start at the source of the problem.

Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, and Stan’s works hard to drain these areas so that they have fewer places to reproduce. The less stagnant water there is, the fewer mosquitoes will be present. Even stagnant water around your home can host mosquitoes.

2. Know their life cycle.

Knowing the life cycle of a mosquito is important, because they are only harmful to you in the final stage. Stan’s Airboat & Marsh Excavator Service inputs a multilevel approach to mosquito control, based on the four stages of their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. We do what we can to control the mosquitoes through the first three of those cycles.

3. Know their active hours.

Dawn, dusk, and the two hours following sunset are when mosquitoes are most active in Louisiana. If you must go outside during these hours, be sure to dress properly to avoid mosquito bites.

4. Wear the proper clothing.

Vibrantly-colored or dark clothing is more visible to mosquitoes, so it’s best to wear white or lighter colors such as beige or khaki while outdoors. Long-sleeved, loose shirts are also beneficial since mosquitoes can bite through tight clothing.

And last, but certainly not least–wear mosquito spray. There are multiple types of mosquito spray, you should be sure to choose the one that is right for you. There are sprays that contain DEET, picaridin, oils, and other ingredients. Make sure you do research before making the choice that’s right for you.

Be mindful of the above tips this mosquito season to keep you and your loved ones safe from mosquito-borne diseases. Contact Stan’s Airboat today for your mosquito control needs!
