How Pipeline Companies Care for The Environment

One of the main arguments against pipeline companies is that they “destroy the environment”.

But this isn’t true.

While yes, building a pipeline does require disturbing the land initially, this land can be completely reclaimed.  

Understanding land reclamation

Land reclamation is the process of reconstructing the disturbed land to be as close to its original condition as possible. 

Reclamation is often mandated by law in jurisdictions where CEPA member companies operate, but these requirements change across jurisdictions.

Typically, environmental protection plans (EPPs) are created ahead of time to detail the protection measures that must be taken during and after the completion of the project.

The first step of reclamation is conducting an evaluation to understand the biophysical resources that the land’s footprint consists of (e.g., water, soil, animals, plants). 

After this, proper conservation measures are mapped out so that adverse environmental effects are avoided and the land can be returned to its original state.

These conservation measures include plans to: 

• Replace the soil and re-plant non-tree vegetation. (Trees are not typically allowed to be planted over buried pipelines due to safety reasons.) 
• Carefully remove and store the topsoil.
• Monitor the reclamation progress and make changes as needed.
• Control erosion and maintain land capability.
• Restore animal and plant habitats, and more.
